It was a weekend of racing, training and recovering for Team Sixcycle-RK&O as half the team was in action at various crits held throughout the area including the Tour of Somerville while the other half of the team headed to the beach for a mix of training and recovery. Tour of New York (Floyd Bennett Field) Race Report
I skipped Friday’s crit as the weekend traffic had already clogged the bridges and tunnels. Saturday’s FBF race was fun. About 40 miles, with a decent breeze that could favor a breakaway. I was in several breaks during the race. None had the right mix. A group countered one of my moves, and looked promising. I soloed up to to them with about 4 to go. In the last two laps, the break was falling apart, with a good number of people not working and the field chasing at about 20 seconds back, but I decided to work with a BH rider and a couple of others to keep it away. We stuck it but I was too beat to contest the sprint. Grabbed the last money spot.
Bound Brook Criterium Race Report
I was a little tired in Sunday’s crit at Bound Brook, but Bryan looked strong. We both got caught behind a rider who almost went down in the last turn, causing us to brake hard and reaccelerate when the drag race to the finish line had already started. Unsatisfying but that’s crit racing.
Tour of Somerville Race Report
Yesterday’s was a short race, 20 miles, but a fast course. Huge crowds, live music….a real event. Bryan and Tom lined up with me. I tried a few moves off the front, but the field of 115 3’s was too eager to earn some glory on Memorial Day. In the last couple of laps, I was tired from the efforts off the front but not yet ready to throw in the towel. As various riders sought to move up the field, it started getting crashy. Any chance I had of placing was cut off thanks to some riders who went down right in front of me in the last set of turns leading into the finish. I guess riding that same turn 16 times previously in the past 40 minutes didn’t give them a good read on what it was like. Way too far back, I decided not to sprint for 25th and sat up for a safe spin across the finish.
